National Public Competition for Architectural Ideas – Indigenous Women’s House (CAMI)

Introduction
The National Public Competition for Architectural Ideas for the Indigenous Women’s House (CAMI) is an unprecedented initiative by the University of Brasília (UnB), in partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Architects – Federal District Department (IAB-DF), aimed at recognizing the rights of Indigenous women and creating a safe, welcoming, and symbolic space for them.
Presentation
The competition seeks to overcome structural violence inherited from colonialism, racism, and the historical denial of public policies for Indigenous peoples. The Indigenous Women’s House is a facility focused on shelter, protection, and care for Indigenous women experiencing violence, while respecting their cultures, territories, languages, and traditional knowledge.
About the Project
The project was created in response to a scenario of severe invisibility and institutional neglect, including the lack of data on violence against Indigenous women, the absence of specialized services, distance from public facilities, language barriers, institutional racism, and the misuse of the notion of “culture” to justify rights violations. The proposal is based on a reparative, intersectional, and territorialized perspective, addressing not only gender violence but also the multiple silences and institutional barriers experienced by these women.
